SCENES FROM A CHINATOWN FOOD CENTRE

The scenes below are taken at Peoples Park Complex. This Complex was redeveloped from a earlier open air market place where all manner of merchandise was sold. It was one of the cheapest places to buy household goods. There were also numerous food vendors selling a variety of local cooked food. This open air market was burnt down in a large fire. The Government then built a Shopping Complex to house the vendors. It is still a popular Destination both for locals and tourists in search of   good bargains. Shown below is the inside of the Food Centre in the Complex.

SCENES FROM THE SINGAPORE RIVER

The Singapore River is where Modern Singapore all started. Sir Stamford Raffles (the founder of modern Singapore) a representative of the British East India Company first landed here. He came with the intention to start a trading post. The Singapore River has from the early days of its founding in1819 been the main artery of commerce.

Ancient Singapore long before the coming of Raffles has many colourful legends attached and its history is intertwined with that of the founding of the Malacca Sultanate which at the height of its power was overlord of much of the Malay world. This story I will try to tell in another section later.

Modern Singapore has a population made up of a majority of Chinese immigrants, a minority of Malays and Indians and a sprinkling of people of many ethnicity from all over the world.
